Why AI Amplifies Confidence Faster Than It Builds Judgment — and What That Means for the Systems We're Building.

AI Compresses Knowledge. It Doesn’t Create Judgment.

Knowledge is becoming cheap. It is searchable, compressible, and now automatable. AI can generate code, frameworks, presentations, strategies, and analysis in seconds. What once took years to learn can now be reproduced almost instantly. And that changes perception.

Because knowledge is easy to demonstrate. It is deterministic. The output looks intelligent, polished, and sophisticated. But wisdom is different.

Wisdom is understanding why systems break at scale. Why edge cases matter more than the happy path. Why human behavior quietly dismantles perfect architectures. Why speed, without context, creates fragility.

Knowledge shows up in outputs. Wisdom reveals itself in outcomes. And outcomes take time. That's why wisdom often appears slow, even outdated, in an AI-first world — while automated knowledge feels magical, fast, and convincing.

This is where the gap begins.

The Dunning–Kruger Effect Meets Vibe Coding

And this is where the Dunning–Kruger effect quietly enters what we now call vibe coding. The tools are deceptively simple. You describe what you want. Code appears. It runs. The interface asks nothing of you — no syntax, no architectural decisions, no awareness of trade-offs. The simplicity of the input creates the illusion that the problem itself is simple.

So the ability to generate code gets mistaken for the ability to engineer systems. Shipping a prototype starts to feel equivalent to understanding architecture. Confidence rises — far faster than actual depth.

The demos work. The interfaces look impressive. The outputs feel intelligent. But beneath that, something else is happening.

The Data Beneath the Surface

An analysis by GitClear tracking 211 million lines of code changes from 2020 to 2024 found that code duplication quadrupled. Code churn — code merged and then quickly rewritten — nearly doubled.

The outputs looked fine. The foundations were quietly weakening.

That is the knowledge–wisdom gap, made visible.

AI Amplifies What You Bring to It

AI is compressing access to knowledge. It is not compressing the journey to judgment. And the implications are becoming clearer.

AI works as a force multiplier — but only when the person using it already understands systems: architecture, failure modes, edge cases, and the messy reality of human behavior.

Without that foundation, AI doesn't just amplify capability. It amplifies confidence. And confidence without depth is exactly where systems fail — quietly at first, then all at once.

Vibe coding is powerful because it democratises creation. It becomes dangerous when it democratises overconfidence.
