How Voice AI Handles Early-Bucket (1-30 DPD) Collections for Microfinance Loans
Voice AI handles early-bucket (1–30 Days Past Due, DPD) microfinance collections by calling recently overdue borrowers in their own language, calmly explaining the shortfall, and securing a promise-to-pay date. It enforces RBI's 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. window, avoids harsh or third-party contact, and routes hardship cases to human officers.
This is an educational explainer, not legal advice. For binding provisions, refer to the official RBI circular.
Key facts: RBI's Microfinance Directions treat a microfinance loan as a collateral-free loan to a household earning up to ₹3,00,000 a year (RBI Microfinance Directions, 2022). YuVoice handles over 2.5 crore calls a month for lenders working inside these rules.
Why Is the 1–30 DPD Window So Critical?
The first month of delinquency is where microfinance recovery is won or lost. Early-bucket borrowers are usually not wilful defaulters — they have missed a centre meeting, faced a cash-flow gap, or forgotten a due date. A prompt, respectful call in this window resolves most cases before they harden into deeper delinquency.
The economics are stark. Ticket sizes are tiny — often ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 — so the cost of a field visit can exceed the instalment being recovered. Voice-first early-bucket outreach keeps cost-to-collect proportionate while preserving the borrower relationship. It is the natural next step after a missed pre-due reminder.
Handled badly, this stage generates the harassment complaints regulators care about. Handled well, it is simply a helpful, well-documented nudge.
What Does an Early-Bucket Call Do — and Not Do?
The goal is a clear, mutually agreed promise-to-pay (PTP), not pressure. A compliant early-bucket call:
- Confirms identity before disclosing any account information.
- States the overdue amount and days past due factually — no exaggeration of consequences.
- Asks an open question — "Kya koi dikkat aa rahi hai?" — to surface genuine hardship.
- Agrees a realistic PTP date and payment mode.
- Reminds the borrower that recovery happens at the mutually agreed designated place, per RBI rules.
- Routes distress or dispute to a human officer instead of pressing on.

A Sample 1–30 DPD Call (Hinglish)
"Namaste [BORROWER_NAME] ji, main [LENDER_NAME] ki taraf se bol rahi hoon. Aapki ₹[AMOUNT] ki kist [DAYS] din se baaki hai. Koi pareshaani ho toh bataiye — hum saath mein hal nikaalte hain. Aap agli kist kab tak de payengi? Aap [DESIGNATED_PLACE] par jama kar sakti hain, ya main [NODAL_OFFICER_NUMBER] se aapko connect kar deti hoon. Dhanyavaad."
How Do RBI's Recovery Rules Shape These Calls?
The RBI Microfinance Directions 2022 are specific about recovery conduct. Para 7.4.2 requires that recovery be made at a designated or central place mutually decided by the borrower and the lender — field staff may visit the borrower's home or workplace only if the borrower fails to appear at that place on two or more successive occasions. Para 7.4.3 lists deemed-harsh practices: threatening or abusive language, persistent or odd-hour calling, harassing relatives, publishing the borrower's name, violence, and misleading the borrower about the debt.
Voice AI operationalises all of this. It never visits a home, never contacts a third party, never announces a name, and enforces the calling window and frequency caps in software. Note that RBI's separate recovery-agent circular of August 12, 2022 explicitly does not apply to microfinance loans — microfinance conduct is governed by the Directions above.
What About Consent and Borrower Data?
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), the overdue amount, phone number and repayment history are personal data. Collection calls on an active loan rest on a clear contractual purpose, but the platform still records consent, honours opt-outs, and restricts data to the servicing purpose.
How AI Helps Microfinance Lenders
Voice AI makes early-bucket collections both scalable and demonstrably fair. It reaches every 1–30 DPD borrower quickly, in the right language, explains the shortfall without exaggeration, and secures a realistic promise-to-pay — while never contacting a third party, never visiting a home, and never calling outside 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Genuine hardship is surfaced by open questions and routed to human officers rather than pushed. Because conduct rules are coded in, harassment risk drops and every interaction is provable through recordings and time-stamps. The result is higher promise-to-pay and kept-promise rates, lower cost-to-collect on tiny tickets, and fewer accounts rolling into deeper delinquency.

FAQ
What counts as early-bucket in microfinance collections? Accounts that are 1–30 Days Past Due (DPD). These borrowers are usually facing a temporary cash-flow gap rather than wilful default, so prompt, respectful outreach resolves most cases.
Can an AI voice bot legally make microfinance recovery calls? Yes. RBI regulates conduct, not the tool. The bot must follow the Microfinance Directions — 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. hours, no harassment, no third-party contact — exactly as a human agent would, and the lender stays accountable.
Where must microfinance recovery take place? At a designated or central place mutually agreed by the borrower and lender (Para 7.4.2). Voice calls respect this; field visits to a home or workplace are allowed only after the borrower misses that place on two or more successive occasions.
How does voice AI handle a borrower who genuinely cannot pay? It asks open questions to detect hardship, avoids pressure, and routes the case to a human officer for restructuring or a settlement conversation instead of continuing to press.
Does the RBI recovery-agent circular apply here? No. The August 12, 2022 recovery-agent circular explicitly excludes microfinance loans, which are covered by the Microfinance Directions 2022.
How is compliance proven? Every call logs the time, language, script and full transcript, so contact hours, tone, frequency and third-party rules can be audited during grievance redressal.
