15 RBI-Compliant Debt Collection Call Scripts (Free Templates)

RBI-compliant debt collection call scripts keep recovery firm but never coercive. These 15 free templates span pre-due nudges to broken-promise follow-ups for personal loans, credit cards, and two-wheeler loans — each written to respect the Reserve Bank of India's recovery-agent rules on calling hours, harassment, and fair conduct.

This is an educational explainer, not legal advice. Every collections call in India must comply with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) circular on Outsourcing of Financial Services – Responsibilities of regulated entities employing Recovery Agents (RBI, 12 August 2022). It directs that lenders and their agents must not call a borrower before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., must not use intimidation or harassment, and must not make threatening or anonymous calls. Use these templates as a starting point and have your compliance team sign off before deployment.

What Makes a Collection Call Script RBI-Compliant?

A compliant script does four things in every call: identify the caller and lender, state the purpose without threats, offer a path to resolution, and close with the borrower's consent respected. It never shames, never threatens legal or social consequences it cannot substantiate, and never contacts the borrower outside permitted hours.

All amounts use [AMOUNT] and [DATE] placeholders. Replace [LENDER NAME], [BORROWER NAME], and [AGENT NAME] before use.

Pre-Due Reminder Scripts (Before the Due Date)

Script 1 — Personal loan gentle reminder. "Namaste [BORROWER NAME] ji, main [AGENT NAME] baat kar raha hoon [LENDER NAME] se. Aapki personal loan ki EMI, ₹[AMOUNT], [DATE] ko due hai. Yeh sirf ek friendly reminder hai. Kya aapke registered account mein sufficient balance hai, ya aap koi help chahenge? Aap chahein toh main payment link bhej doon."

Script 2 — Credit card due-date nudge. "Hello [BORROWER NAME], this is [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Your credit card total due is ₹[AMOUNT], payable by [DATE]. Even the minimum amount due keeps your account in good standing and avoids late fees. Would you like me to share the payment options on SMS?"

Early-Bucket Scripts (1–30 Days Past Due)

Script 3 — First missed EMI, personal loan. "Namaste [BORROWER NAME] ji, [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Aapki EMI ₹[AMOUNT] jo [DATE] ko due thi, abhi tak received nahi hui. Koi baat nahi — kya koi temporary issue tha? Aap aaj ya kal tak pay kar sakte hain toh late charge se bach jaayenge. Main aapko payment link bhej doon?"

Script 4 — Credit card, 10 DPD. "Hello [BORROWER NAME], [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Your card payment of ₹[AMOUNT] is now [DPD] days overdue. I want to help you avoid further interest. Can you make the payment today, or would a part-payment be easier to start with?"

Script 5 — Two-wheeler loan, early reminder. "Namaste [BORROWER NAME] ji, main [LENDER NAME] se [AGENT NAME]. Aapki two-wheeler loan EMI ₹[AMOUNT] pending hai [DPD] din se. Kya aap is week pay kar paayenge? Agar koi problem hai toh bataiye, hum options dekh sakte hain."

Script 6 — Confirming a promise to pay. "Thank you, [BORROWER NAME]. So just to confirm — you will pay ₹[AMOUNT] by [DATE]. I'll note that on your account. If anything changes, please call us back on [LENDER NAME]'s helpline. Have a good day."

Mid-Bucket Scripts (30–90 Days Past Due)

Script 7 — Personal loan, firm but calm. "Namaste [BORROWER NAME] ji, [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Aapka overdue amount ab ₹[AMOUNT] ho gaya hai, [DPD] din se pending. Main samajhta hoon halaat mushkil ho sakte hain. Aaiye ek solution nikaalte hain — aap kitna aaj arrange kar sakte hain?"

Script 8 — Two-wheeler, solution-led. "Hello [BORROWER NAME], [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Your loan is ₹[AMOUNT] overdue. I'm not here to trouble you — I'm here to find a way forward. Would a revised payment date of [DATE] work for you?"

Script 9 — Offering a restructure conversation. "[BORROWER NAME] ji, agar aapko regular EMI bharni mushkil ho rahi hai, toh [LENDER NAME] ke paas restructuring ke options ho sakte hain. Kya main aapko hamare team se connect karoon jo aapki eligibility check karke sahi plan bata sakein?"

Script 10 — Hardship acknowledgement. "I understand, [BORROWER NAME]. Job loss and medical bills are genuinely difficult. Let's focus on what's possible. Even ₹[AMOUNT] this week shows intent and protects your credit record. Shall I set that up?"

Settlement and Broken-Promise Scripts

Script 11 — Settlement offer (factual). "[BORROWER NAME] ji, aapke account par ek settlement option available ho sakta hai. Yeh voluntary hai. Main aapko exact terms email aur SMS par bhej doon taaki aap aaraam se dekh sakein aur decide karein. Koi pressure nahi hai."

Script 12 — One-time settlement confirmation. "Thank you, [BORROWER NAME]. To confirm, the agreed one-time settlement is ₹[AMOUNT], payable by [DATE]. You will receive written confirmation from [LENDER NAME]. Please keep that document for your records."

Script 13 — Part-payment plan. "So [BORROWER NAME], we'll split this into two parts — ₹[AMOUNT] by [DATE] and the balance by [DATE]. I've recorded this. Please try your best to honour these dates so we don't have to call again."

Script 14 — Broken promise, respectful follow-up. "Namaste [BORROWER NAME] ji, [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Aapne ₹[AMOUNT] [DATE] tak pay karne ka kaha tha, lekin abhi tak nahi hua. Main check kar raha hoon — kya koi problem aayi? Aaiye ek realistic date fix karte hain jo aap definitely rakh sakein."

Script 15 — Final reminder before escalation. "[BORROWER NAME], this is [AGENT NAME] from [LENDER NAME]. Your account remains overdue at ₹[AMOUNT]. If it stays unpaid, [LENDER NAME] may proceed as per your loan agreement and applicable law. We would much rather resolve this with you today. What can you arrange?"

Compliance Notes: What These Scripts Deliberately Avoid

Every script above is written to stay inside the RBI's guardrails. Keep these rules in front of your callers:

How AI Helps Run These Scripts at Scale

Running 15 scripts consistently across lakhs of accounts is where automation earns its keep. YuVoice can dial early-bucket and pre-due accounts, speak the right script in the borrower's language, respect the 8 a.m.–7 p.m. window automatically, and hand emotional or dispute cases to a human agent. Because every call is scripted and logged, compliance teams get a full audit trail — who was called, when, and exactly what was said — which is far harder to guarantee with a purely manual floor. See our complete India collections playbook for how this fits an end-to-end recovery strategy.

FAQ

Q1. Are these debt collection call scripts legally approved? No script is a substitute for your own compliance sign-off. These templates are built to reflect RBI's recovery-agent rules, but your legal and compliance teams should review and adapt them to your product and policies before use.

Q2. What time can collection calls be made in India? Under the RBI circular dated 12 August 2022, lenders and their agents must not call borrowers before 8:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m. for recovery of overdue loans.

Q3. Can a collection agent call a borrower's family or employer? No. The RBI directs that agents must not intrude on the privacy of a borrower's family members, referees, or friends, and must not humiliate the borrower publicly. Contact should be with the borrower.

Q4. Are Hinglish scripts acceptable for collections? Yes. What matters is tone and content, not language. Hinglish often improves comprehension for Indian borrowers. Keep the message clear, respectful, and free of threats regardless of language.

Q5. How do settlement scripts stay compliant? Settlements must be voluntary and documented. Scripts should present terms as an option, avoid pressure, and confirm the agreement in writing so the borrower has a record.

Q6. Can AI voice agents legally make these calls? Yes, provided they follow the same rules — permitted hours, clear identification, no harassment, and valid consent for the contact channel under the DPDP Act and TRAI's commercial-communication rules.

Conclusion

Good collections is not about pressure — it is about clear, respectful, well-timed conversations that give borrowers a realistic path to pay.
